My Ride
2006 Rocket 3 classic
So, I have had a boner for the 2013 s3 se since it came out so I give myself a pass for buying it at the NOS price three weeks ago. Now BMW & KTM have brought 2 new standards to the table that relegate the speedy irrelevant!!! Like Harley triumph let it's bread & butter live off its reputation too long. The advantage our bike has over the s1000r are subjective now looking at the dyno chart The speedy is still respectable, but the bmw's torque is nearly identical and spins out a couple more grand and the superduke...nothing can touch it.

Watch for the next iteration of the Speedy. Triumph will catch up.

Ride all three and I think you will find
A. The Triumph Triple is superior in real world applications
B. The Triumphs Triple SOUNDS better than the other two (it speaks to your soul)
C. Triumph ROCKS

Seriously, unless you are racing this bike on track for big money....the number differences on paper.....don't translate to how you feel when you get off the bike .....look back at it, and grin like a Cheshire cat.....I have done that with, and currently do that with every Triumph I have owned.......I can't say that for the BMW's Hondas Suzukis Kawasakis or Harleys ........ "Grin Factor" doesn't show up in comparo numbers
:y2:

Great post, Adrian. TUP TUP

I like KTM's and I have three of them in the garage right now. They are great at what they do and only two of the three were ever ridden anywhere near to getting the max performance out of them. My sons pushed theirs to near max in the hare scrambles they raced. They did this on the track and that is where you can possibly get the max out of the KTM, street wise the bike is not going to be capable to provide the same in anywhere near a legal ride. For this reason, I don't see it being any better than the Speed Triple on the street. The best of the two bikes is the one that leaves you with the biggest grin, whether it is the Speed Triple or the KTM. I don't place the BMW in the same league as these two so I won't try to elevate it to the same status.

Now with that said, I'd love to have the KTM but it would be hard for me to pass up the Triple for the KTM.

My favorite thing about triumphs is stopping for gas, my bike, the rocket or speedy usually draw attention and make for good conversation. I have already topped out my speedy on these illinois farm roads the bike gets up to speed pretty quick I'm confident the more I get to know it the more i'll like it.

When I bought my S3 (previously had Honda CBR), I compared all of the naked sport bikes at the time. The only one that had as much character and/or performance was the Duc Monster. The Super Duke was relatively new and had some power band issues. The S3 always attracts a crowd when I stop for gas or something to eat. As for performance, it depends on the rider. Most riders can't push their 600cc sport bikes to their limit not to mention a liter bike. My S3 is 6 years old and I can still smoke a newer liter bikes especially is the twisties. Sure they will get me top end but you can only go straight for so long. I’d wouldn’t trade my S3 for any other motorcycle…except for a shiny new S3R but I sure would miss my round headlights.

No matter what anyone else makes the S3 is still the standard they are all trying to emulate.

Well said. TUP TUP

well, I put 3400 on my s3se this summer and I apoligize for calling it a dinasaur(musta' been reading too many reviews) I ride 20 minutes out to get to open farm roads where theres 10 miles between stop signs and i stay in triple digit mph's, but it's coming home fighting traffic that I really appreciate this beast. I start weaving thru traffic you know once you commit and the cagers have other ideas and try to box me in I just drop down another gear and give them the bird as I fly bye. fun stuff, how about 2nd gear wheelies thru intersections, man I love this bike.

I hate to say I "told you so" .....awh NO I LOVE saying it and am GLAD I can. ;) in a GOOD way. :)
Triumphs are just simply friggin awesome. My Tiger is my 3rd TRIUMPH (out of over 20 bikes in my life) and its so damn good I don't lust after any other bikes.....at all. it is "THE ONE" for me.
SGlad you are enjoying that SPEEDY3 Steve. :)

Adrian, I agree with you about Triumphs. I currently own three and have owned three previously. In 57 years of riding on many different bikes, Triumph does it for me.

Triumph does it for me too. I've had my Thunderbird now for 20 years, and it's the best bike I've ever had, as Hemi so rightly says when you get off the bike your grinning like a Cheshire cat. I had a BMW and whilst it did everything that my Thunderbird does, it was like riding a sanitized sowing machine, ( Not that I can remember ever riding a sowing machine :) ) and it did nothing in the grinning department at all. I like all of us look at other bikes, but I always come back to Triumph.

I must agree also. I never fail to get off my Spd 3R without a smile on my face. I have looked at the KTM super Duke and BMW S1000R and though they are more powerful and great handling motorcycles, they are only able to be ridden faster due to all the electronic intervention to keep you on the road. I think they have surpassed the limit of lbs. to HP that can be controlled without traction control, wheelie control etc. I will admit that I am tempted by the ever increasing HP and gadgetry of the new naked bikes but I don't like the feeling of being dependent on the computer to keep the shiny side up.

I understand what you ares saying and I agree.

This thread still has a pulse. I looked a the new tuono last week after reading some press not that i'm looking to replace the speedy I thought the new rsv4 factory looks good but it isn't comfortable. I agree also the with your post but remain concerned when the bike isn't included in streetfighter shootouts how will triumph attract new riders? at least ride by wire and cruise control.

Triumph does need to, at least, keep up with the competition; they should lead the competition. Not keeping up with the competition is what killed the old Triumph.

I'd like to think that they've learned from the disasters of the past.

It's their best selling bike....they have to keep up.

My '08 Speedy still keeps the competition at bay in the twisties...all the electronic help doesn't make up for experience. Most can't push their bike close to the limit anyway especially a liter bike.

Don't get me wrong, I'll always take more power, better handling, and even some TC...until then I'll have to keep on embarrassing those on their newest ride.

Always a smile under my helmet!

"keep up" with the competition" ??????
I have owned a Triumph Sprint with 98,000 (yes THOUSAND) miles on it and sold it and it is STILL going. I think Triumph can "keep up" just fine.
FYI I saw the insides of that engine when I changed the sprag clutch and cracked the engine cases ....and you can't IMAGINE how CLEAN those pistons and rings and all where.
Yes Mr. Bloor did his homework ;)
