Very good article and I am pleased to know that I do it right - most of the time.
 
I got so used to using whatever brakes I had working back in the 70's that I am fine using any combination. At that time the most braking came from the back wheel with the brakes and gears combined.
 
I got so used to using whatever brakes I had working back in the 70's that I am fine using any combination. At that time the most braking came from the back wheel with the brakes and gears combined.
In the 50's and early 60's, some front brakes had a tendency to stick and hang up. Thus I learned to gear down and use mostlt the rear brake back then.
 
@CarlS I was rather shocked when I noticed in later years people were not keen on using the back brakes at all.
 
@DaveM That surprised me also. Just the opposite of when we were learning.
 
@CarlS All those years of using the back breaks only I never felt unsafe, in fact I had my broadside down to a fine art BGRIN
