Rattle At Startup

OK, now I did a bit of listening with a stethoscope. All the Rocker area are just swishing along nicely.
Then I touched the injector body, and there was the clacking sound!
It must be the solinoid rattle, I believe this happens when the ecu doesn't demand enriching fuel during the warm up and they rattle until warm.
I suspect the ecu is updated after the first service to allow a leaner mixture. This is the only explanation I have but maybe if others can chime in, then I'll be interesting to hear.

I bought a stethoscope a few months back....I could hear the injectors cackling....I will listen again see if it stops as the motor warms.

Has the engineer not looked at it yet.

Not yet, as I never ride on salted roads. Made that mistake years ago.

I've got a Hymalanian, but ride it in all weather's but not even that will see salt unless it's an emergency.

Decided this year....save being backless for 3 months I would use the Bantam....only after lots of rain and no fresh salt....on dry roads only.....other wise it sits there one year to the next.

Just got the Bonnie out.....had a listen with the stethoscope.....

Injectors do give a very regular ticking noise.....but I can here the engine tapping sound in the background....slightly irregular.....not in time with the injectors ticking...
If I put the scope on the left side rocker cover....I hear it through the scope.

So to me its not injectors.

The Castrol SAE20/50 has made the Tapping sound more subdued.

OK, sounds a different area to mine.
The valves on mine were very quiet. The only noise was the injection.
Best get the tappet gaps checked.

One of the first things I checked....my theory....rocker arms as they have some free play....ali head warms up quickly noise goes.

Isn't your tapping like mine...a bit irregular?

Went along to my local Triumph shop today to book the bike in for next week.

Chatting to the mechanic there, said that it's mainly the cam chain tensioner. So we will see!

That was one of the first things I suspected....still a possibility....but why would it only show its head immediately and dropping the running in oil at the first service.....didnt yours do that as well....I know it was like that with others I have chatted to.

Lets hope your dealer is on the ball....upto now none have sorted it for anybody I have spoken to....they all say ignore it as iot goes when the motor gets warm.

Not what I want to hear from them.

The mechanic said that due to different oil used, the oil has to tension the tensioner, and the 'running in' oil does a better job in getting to the tensioner quicker.
Service guy has a xe, he said they make a noise after starting but he's not worried.

Running is oil (SAE30) Mineral is a lot thicker than the normal fully synthetic 10-40....it would take longer to get in the quite small hole in the tensioner body....and prob take longer to leak out engine stopped.

I was told word for word almost that its my engine balance shafts are slightly out of adjustment....long as it goes forget it.....

Checked it....they were fine.

A guy in the town I live in prepares race bikes....is connected with a race team.....runs a dyno shop and is very well respected says its mechanical and its near the top of the motor he also users a stethoscope.

But he also said...ignore it.

Anyway be interesting see what your Triumph Dealer Has To Say.

The original oil fill has all the stuff associated with a new engine in the suspension. I really wouldn’t worry about it. I would try to address it though.

Bikes been at the dealers for a week and I've had a call to go and collect her on Saturday.
They replaced the steering lock assembly. They have checked the valve clearance and said nothing now is making any strange noises. I'll be judging that tomorrow.

Was wondering if you had made any progress SB.

When I reset my valve clearances....at first I thought....sorted....but after a few more cold starts I realised it hadn't.

Odd as it did sound ok at first.

Fingers crossed you have better luck.

Please let us know how you go on.

I do not hold my breath on this one. If it goes the same and it's annoying, I'll sell it.

Does your tapping disappear once the engine is warmed doesn't it like mine....for that reason I do think its not a major problem.....more of an annoyance.

Yes it does or did before it went under the knife!
Im off to collect it today.
