In the US, depending on the state, deadly force can be used to stop vehicle thieves. There's been a good handful of such incedents this year alone. One guy tracked down the theive(s) with an AirTag and a full-bore gunfight ensued. The bad guys lost.

When vehicles are fully secure, might not theives resort to violent hijacking? Can't see them becoming upright taxpaying citizens.

When I lived in London, it was considered unwise to walk around at night without a note in your pocket. Mugging money, I think it was termed.

Not a cheap as they used to be, but still relatively cheap. Some people don't have the luxury of all-encompassing insurance plans.

You don't need high-end technological advances to attract violent carjackings. Just ask @DaveM. RSA is one of the global capitals of that stunt. When I was rolling down there, my car was a veritable poor man's James Bond-mobile of countermeasures.

What is worrying vehicle manufacturers (it should, anyway) and others is, if this is verifiable, what else can they get into? How many other things are using a CAN bus system?
