My current passion is reading ads and trying to figure out what it means. What is the original finish? Polished aluminum? If you saw this in an add, what would you think?

It was probably clear-coated aluminum and the clear-coat began to flake off. (??)

I wonder why one wouldn’t just redo a clear coat then? The photos look like aluminum at a distance. It looks original, wondering if he used a clear powder coating on them. It looks like an original from photo distance.

Not a good picture, but an iPhone enlarged. The bike is pretty close to what I’m looking for. LoL. It has miles, but no obvious signs of neglect or abuse to me. The only thing that made me ask why, was the paint on the covers. Is finish wear and deterioration an issue with these parts due to age or use?

I don't think it is common at all, but my T100 has chrome covers so others with later non-chromed models will have to reply.

I just googled “clear powder coat aluminum” and it appears to be one option for refinishing where a clear coat needs replacement. My ignorance, I had not thought that the aluminum parts had any protective coating. I always thought they were brushed aluminum or polished.

Aluminum can pit and corrode if not protected.

How many original finishes were there for these parts? More than one? Been looking at Hermys parts lists. Brushed and lacquered, polished and misc others depending on part. I’m trying to get a feel for what may or may not be original. Since I’m mostly looking at pictures now for candidate bikes, I may make a snap decision on a bike and dismiss a possible candidate. I’ve noticed a few older links may need updating on the forum. Should I comment when I run across one?

I could be wrong, but I don't think anyone here would have all the information about the various finishes year-to-year.

I’m getting an idea there is some variation. That’s good to know, thanks.

It makes me more comfortable looking at some bikes where I see variations that I was not aware of.

The cover indeed has a clear cost of some type over aluminum. The damage is under the clear coat. It would appear it has failed in some spots. I don’t plan to re-coat with a clear coat at this time, but I will need a protective coating of some type.

Here’s what is underneath the clear coat, a brushed aluminum finish. You can see the areas with clear coat still on. I’ll remove the clear coat by small amounts of acetone and then gently scrape it off. A finger nail is enough to remove it, I’m using a wood piece or wood bbq skewer. I don’t want to use a lot of acetone near the seals and rubber bit. Going to have to go slow. After I remove the coat I’ll clean up the remainder of the aluminum damage. It’s all pretty superficial. This is a bit of an experiment. The other covers have similar damage, but not as much or as visible. I’ll probably treat them later when I have reason to remove them from the motorcycle for maintenance reasons.9A953AFB-3D3A-45F4-AAC6-0AD1561BFDBA.jpeg

So I removed the clear coat and cleaned it up a bit. Some fine brass wool and a sparing bit of 150 grit on a few of the roughest spots along with Mother’s aluminum polish, says it shines and protects. Thinking it might still need wax as well. Thoughts? Next going to remove the front sprocket cover and clean and lube the chain, plus clean the cover.2F3AB083-9A26-4889-B9BA-5DDB12064D08.jpeg
