Sorry in advance for the long post, but I believe in full disclosure for the right help.

I purchased this 2016 XRT in Nevada from a dealer with low miles (3k) where I test rode the bike and it performed perfectly.
We trailered it back 5 hours to Arizona and I rode it about 85 miles with no issues.
Monday morning I began commuting to work on the bike when suddenly the cruise control wouldn’t work. No big deal, it’s my first bike with cruise anyway so I didn’t really worry about it. During lunch I found that this happens from time to time and there is a sequence of things that should restart the cruise working again.
After work I tried the method and after the second sequence the cruise light came back on and everything was great. About 15 miles into my 45 mile commute home the bike literally died, lights came on the dash and I had no throttle. Thankfully I was just off the highway and on the back roads. I pulled over hit the ignition switch off, turned the bike off and then turned it back on, flipped the ignition switch to run and the bike fired right up again, however the green cruise control light was on. Nothing I did could either turn off the light OR engage the cruise. I figured it was some fuse issue or something, but it was like 100 degrees out so I drove off toward home. About 10 miles down the road the same thing happens, bike dies etc…. But it fires up again and now the cruise light and the ABS lights are on. I tested the brakes and they worked so I started home again. Literally 9.9 miles later the bike dies again. Now it won’t start and the cruise, ABS and check engine lights are on. Now I pull the seat and check the fuses. Sure enough the 20 amp fuse for the engine cutoff is blown. I used one of my spares and the bike fired up again but only went 5 miles before it died. I pull the seat and the 20 amp fuse is blown. Thankfully another rider stopped and also thankfully he was more mechanically inclined than I am. We ended up determining that every time we replace the 20 amp fuse it blows whenever we flip the ignition switch to “run”.
I haven’t had any time because of work to look at it, but honestly I know so little about Triumphs and I am not very skilled electrically or mechanically speaking.
I am probably going to take it to my local Triumph dealer, but figured I would post here to maybe get an idea of what the issue could be. My unhappy thought is that the dealer knew this bike had issues and despite my direct questions regarding age and mileage I was lied to about something being problematic with this bike. I loved it for what time I got to ride it, but I hope this isn’t going to be some crazy expensive repair…

Did you find the cause of the fuse blowing? Short?

Still working on it, I have the bike half torn down looking for it…

Are you working with a wiring diagram? What items are on that 20 amp fuse?

I was using a diagram, but I have finally given in and brought it to a legit mechanic. I don’t have much space to work as we travel full time in our RV for work. Campgrounds don’t like too much repair work on vehicles at the campsites…. We will see what happens I guess.

There are only a few components using a 20amp fuse. That should narrow the search.

Agreed, I brought it to a repair shop, I work 12 hour days, so not a ton of time to work on it. However they can’t find the issue either. At least not yet. Hopefully I will hear something today from them.

Hope it's simple and an easy fix. Son-in-law and I were out on a ride last Sunday and his bike wouldn't start after we stopped for coffee. The battery wasn't being charged. I suggested he replace the rectifier/regulator and he called last night to tell me he got the part and installed it. I asked him to fire the bike up and check his voltage at the battery. He checked voltage before start and it was 12.7. Started the bike and it was 14.1. Problem solved.

Thanks for the response, the battery tested fine. I even put it on the trickle charger for a couple days to maintain it. The issue was the cutoff/ignition switch would blow the 20 amp fuse every time…

Just an example of an easy fix. If the fuse is blowing after a few minutes it's not a dead short to ground, that would blow immediately. Wonder if a relay is the problem. Without a diagram it's hard to tell where the issue could be.

Yeah, it blows the fuse immediately on flipping the switch to “run”. I couldn’t find the issue, apparently neither can the shop so far. Now I am wondering if I have to replace the entire wiring harness…

That's a dead short to ground. Any arcing from the battery to ground should leave a mark on the frame/engine. I shorted a harness on a 77 Yamaha XS650 once. That fix was a whole new harness. I'd be surprised if it took that much to fix your issue.

Thanks for the advice, the shop should be calling soon with an update…
