So I just test drove an 18 xrt and noticed that right around 45mph there was a gear whine. It occurred after bike had warmed up and was in a narrow band about 5 mph. The noise was not there in 5th or 4th. Is this somewhat common or something to be concerned about. I now own a FJ09 and that is widely known for having a 6th gear wine. Thanks for you input ahead of time. I am gonna be joining the Tiger family shortly.

Hopefully a older 800 pilot will chime in on this for you.
Ahem.... @CarlS
Does this bike have a good maintenance history and reasonable mileage for the year?

Yes it does. I had one small item fixed under warranty. They only other problem I had was a shifter problem which was well documented. Triumph already had a kit to do the replacement work. I had it done and never had another problem. I had over 70,000 miles, over 112654 kilometers, on my 800 XC when it was totalled by an errant driver.i routinely did the required maintenance.

The milage is low 14.5 K. It is at a reputable dealer and they have a "sister dealer" that sell Triumphs. They said they completed all service that was required/due. I did not ask about the maintenance history.

See if they will toss in a 6 month warranty with the deal. Sounds like a decent bike with low miles for the year.

Is 45mpg not a bit slow for 6th gear???

I am only going by my Bonnie T100.....if I give the bike to much to do at say 40mph in 5th....only has 5 gears....the gearbox protests a bit......its just ok on a flat road if not accelerating at 40.....but only just.

I use 15w50 semi synthetic in my engine bit heavier than recommended......seems to make the gear box quitter

That may be it, Nick. Never even thought of the speed/gear being too low.
My 1200 does not like to be in 6th gear below 90 kph(55 mph).

You might want to try MOTUL oil. It is synthetic oil and more expensive around $20 a liter, but I was told it quieted down my current bike. Tried it and it did quiet it down. It is a ester based oil and is supposed to maintain its viscosity better as it gets warm/hot.
